The Essential Guide To Shopping For Unisex Baby Items

in Babies & Kids

Having a baby is never easy – and future parents who choose to not unveil the baby’s sex beforehand have an added layer of uncertainty. Fortunately, planning for a baby without knowing the child’s gender doesn’t have to be difficult, provided you know how to identify the best unisex baby items.

Whether you’re unsure of your baby’s sex, expecting twins or simply interesting in choosing versatile items, these guidelines will help you select unisex baby items based on what is trending right now.

Finding great unisex baby items to create a wardrobe:

Who says blue is for boys and pink is for girls? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with reversing the norm, but if you’d prefer to choose items that resist gender bias, you still have plenty of options.

Neutral shades are not only practical, they’re also becoming quite trendy. The following shades will for work equally well for either gender:

  • Cream
  • Gray
  • Yellow
  • Red
  • Beige
  • White

Patterns can be a great way to introduce more vibrant shades into the unisex baby wardrobe. Items that combine traditionally gendered shades like pale blue with a neutral shade or two contrasting neutral shades work especially well. Stripes are not only modern and on trend, they’re also  extremely versatile. Some of our favorite color combinations include red/yellow, cream/blue, gray/yellow and red/light blue. Unlike more ‘girly’ prints like florals or polka dots, stripes are an excellent option for either sex.

As for the images that appear on the clothing, you have plenty of choices – photos of animals or written statements work well for either sex. Most retailers tend to separate infant clothing into sections – one for boys, one for girls –  and as a general rule of thumb, you may find more neutral colors and prints in the boy’s section. Overalls, two-piece legging-and-shirt sets and onesies are wonderful unisex choices.

Now the question is: Where can you find a great selection of unisex baby clothes? Look to big brands like Gap, Walmart, Kmart and JCPenney. All of these stores stock lots and lots of options for both unisex baby items and traditionally gendered clothing. The best part? You can score great deals on merchandise from all of these retailers here at Savor.
